Bear Mountain has been run by volunteers since 1959, when the first rope tow went up in an old hay field. Snowmaking, night skiing and a terrain park — seven kilometres from Dawson Creek.
Early Bird passes are sold up to Ski Fair — the cheapest the season gets. The club has not published this year's date, so call before you assume you have time.

Why Bear Mountain

Volunteers cover roughly 40% of what it costs to run Bear Mountain each winter. As president Paul Gevatkoff put it: "If we don’t have that community spirit, we wouldn’t have a ski hill here."

The club put hill lighting in for the 1970–71 season and snowmaking in for 1987–88. Two decisions, decades apart, that between them turned a hay-field rope tow into a hill you can ski on a January weeknight.

The whole season turns on one date
Early Bird passes are sold up to Ski Fair. After that the same pass costs about a third more — an adult goes from $396 to $528, a family from $972 to $1,296. Which makes the date of Ski Fair the most valuable piece of information on the whole site, and the one thing that is not written down anywhere.

Bear Mountain did not arrive finished. The lights, the snowmaking, the chalet, the park — each one was a club decision followed by a lot of donated hours.

1959
The first rope tow
The association formed in 1959–60 and put the first rope tow up in an old hay field.

The lights went in
Hill lighting arrived, and with it the ability to ski here after dark.

The land
The Dawson Creek Area Authority took control of the property. The club has operated on a lease from it ever since.

Snowmaking
The hill stopped depending entirely on what fell out of the sky.
The hill runs on volunteers
"We do it because Bear Mountain is such an asset to our city," says volunteer coordinator Bryan Harman. Roughly 40% of the cost of running the place is people turning up.
