Bear Mountain is about seven kilometres from Dawson Creek — close enough that a weeknight under the lights is a normal thing to do, rather than a trip you plan around.

Opening days and operating hours are the single most-looked-up thing on any ski hill's website. We could not verify Bear Mountain's from published material, and inventing them is how somebody ends up in a locked car park.

The chalet

The warm building at the bottom, and you can book it

The chalet is where a day at Bear Mountain starts and ends — boots on, gloves on the rail, back down at four o'clock for the feeling coming back into your fingers.

It is also available to rent. The club takes chalet bookings through Charene on 250-219-6056 — worth knowing if you are looking for somewhere for a birthday in February.

    The lights have been here since 1970–71. A hill seven kilometres out of town with lighting is a Tuesday-night hill, not just a Saturday one.
